Using Grit & Growth Mindset to Improve Your Performance & Increase the Effectiveness of Your Teams

Featuring

DR MILANA HOGAN, Ed.D
Chief Legal Talent Officer, Sullivan & Cromwell, LLP & Author, Grit, the Secret to Advancement: Stories of Successful Women Lawyers
Lead Researcher, ABA Commission on Women in the Profession’s Gritty Teams Study

In spite of the fact that women outnumber men in American colleges and law schools and account for roughly half of the U.S. labor force, there are significantly fewer women occupying the most prestigious, powerful, and best-paid positions. Rather than focusing on what prevents women from succeeding (as much of the research to date has very admirably done), this program will explore the body of research that seeks to understand what successful women have in common with the goal of learning from their experiences and understanding more about what it really takes to succeed in today’s complex and evolving world. Dr. Hogan and world-class litigator Roberta Liebenberg will focus on two critically important traits that successful women share: (1) grit, defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, and (2) growth mindset, defined as the view that one’s most basic abilities (including intelligence) can be strengthened and developed through dedication, effort and hard work. Drawing on personal experience and a wealth of emerging research on team dynamics and leadership development, they will discuss the science behind these traits, provide specific tools to assess the presence of these traits at both individual and team levels, and use science (and storytelling) to offer practical ways for participants to incorporate these concepts into their personal, professional development strategies both now and in the future.

As you build and grow your business, intentional effort is required to create an environment that enhances performance through diverse representation, equity, and inclusion. From your stated mission, vision, and values to your business strategy, incorporating an inclusive mindset can permeate and impact your business performance.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has been the catalyst for businesses to examine not only the way we work but how and where we work.  In 2021, mandated closures negatively impacted service based businesses of all sizes.  Law firms were not immune from the decreases in business caused by the pandemic. While some law firms struggled to adjust; many firms experienced rate and demand increases.  Firms enjoying this growth had to redefine ways to grow a legal team through a combination of priority-shifting, risk-taking and vision. This panel will share strategies on growing, managing and redefining your law practice in the new normal.
