Virtual Speaker Series - How to Pivot from Biglaw and Beyond

As law students and brand-new lawyers we are told that there are certain paths to define success, and certain ways to measure it. What do you do, when the standard recipe for “success” is one that either doesn’t meet your expectations, or you are looking for a different path? “Pivoting,” “retooling,” “rebranding”—whatever you want to call it—is challenging, but it can be the difference between being successful and fulfilled rather than burned out and unhappy. My 20 plus years in practice, including sojourns into clerking, Biglaw, teaching, a midsize firm, and now solo practice have taught me a series of lessons.

Takeaways:
• What questions should you ask when you want to make a change?
• Brainstorming and thinking outside the box, to find your passion for the law again.
• Balancing the need for a new path with economic realities
• Ways to analyze a five-year plan for a executing a new path.

Speaker: Margarita Coale, The Law Offices of Margarita Coale, PLLC

Bio:
Margarita Coale is a sole practitioner in Dallas, focused exclusively on the representation of authors, and romance writers in particular (with some podcast and gaming clients and children's authors for a little variety). She focuses her practice on helping her clients protect their intellectual property rights as well as a variety of literary business matters. A love of romance novels is one of the few constants in her well-traveled, adventurous life. Born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, she attended law school at the University of Texas (getting a couple of other degrees along the way), worked for several years at the white-shoe New York firm representing Enron in its epic bankruptcy filing, and then taught procedure and international law at the Texas Wesleyan School of Law in Fort Worth. Her current practice grew out of her business-law work and has expanded to include writers worldwide on a host of commercial and intellectual property issues. Margarita has helped many authors successfully negotiate agreements for the reversion of rights. Her practice includes advising clients of their intellectual property rights, the creation of literary trusts, and the legal day-to-day operations in the business of being an author. “Mom” to four children (and wife to one more), she also leads the high school orchestra booster club and coordinates volunteers for the junior high and high school. She can often be heard speaking to her clients about their universes in hopes of mystical babies and hopes in 2023 to be able to embark on a cross country trip and visit Yellowstone and Glacier Parks.
